Checking Car Fluid Levels

When it comes to topping up the fluid levels of your car, you will notice that there are multiple fluid compartments. So how do you know which one needs to be topped up, and what with?

Well this guide will explain how to tell which fluid level needs to be topped up, and the best ways to go about doing so.

Before learning what lights indicate which fluid is low, it is important to note that the caps on each of the fluid reservoirs should be labelled or iconed.

Due to the fact that each brand of car will likely have different methods for labelling said caps, we would recommend that you check the manual as it will give you the details you need.

Brake fluid level

First up we have the brake fluid level. The main way to tell that you are running low on brake fluid, is that you will see this light appear on your car dashboard.

If this is the case, you ideally want to take your car to a garage as soon as you can to get this topped up, as the brake fluid is an essential part of the braking system in your car.

Although the light should always appear in the event of your brake fluid levels becoming low, you may also start to feel that your brakes are not as ‘strong’ or reactive as they were. If this is the case, you should also get the garage to check this for you.

Washer fluid level


Next on the list is your washer fluid level. Thankfully the washer fluid is easy to top up, and is generally located close to the framework of your car, making it more accessible.

If you cannot access your washer fluid reservoir, then you can also get someone to top it up for you.

It is also worth noting that washer fluids often have summer and winter variants, so it is important to ensure that your car is receiving the correct seasonal fluid. Nothing bad will happen if you use the wrong one, but it will often be less effective.

Oil level

Last but certainly not least is your oil levels. Keeping these topped up is essential as it helps to lubricate the engine. If the oil is not dispersing correctly then you can cause severe damage to the engine.

Similarly to the washing fluid, you may need to get someone to top this up for you.

We would recommend that whenever the light does come on, you should go to a garage and get it checked/topped up there. In addition to this, whenever you go for your regular car servicing, get it topped up then too.
